Using as a starting point Rebecca Solnit’s observations about the egalitarian communities that often form post-disaster, Nowhere, Now Here considers the “disaster utopia” in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, ongoing police brutality protests, and a small Ohio town named Utopia. Combining both documentary and scripted footage, the film explores the limits and possibilities of utopian imagination through personal essay, narrative fiction, and writing by W.H. Auden, Albert Camus, and Susan Sontag.
