Occupy Wall Street: the Comic Book 2011
All of the dialogue in this comic is appropriated from Occupy Wall Street signs. I chose a comic book structure not only for its history of political critique, but also for its classification as a “low” or populist form of art–fitting for a populist movement of the 99%. In many ways, the book is an idealized form of what the movement aspires to: characters from different strips in dialogue with one another. At the same time, however, the book reveals just how easily populist slogans can be appropriated by different sides for different aims, as when the big money characters also speak in Occupy signs.
