House of Cards 2012
hand-made pop-up book with digital prints

Funded by the Pauline and Irving Tanner Dean’s Scholars Program, House of Cards is an interdisciplinary project combining my interests in creative writing, bookmaking, printmaking, and sculpture to explore the housing bubble. The text weaves together both personal and journalistic narratives. I explore the Clinton and Bush era pushes for homeownership, the political rhetoric surrounding the American dream, sociological implications of the housing bubble’s burst, and theories of paper architecture. At the same time, a personal narrative relays my own experience growing up in a family of builders and real estate developers. The pop-up structures resemble a house being built and then torn down. In turning pages, the reader becomes complicit in the construction and demolition of these structures.
